Giralte de Bruselas et al., The Retable of the Main Altar at Oviedo Cathedral: Detail, the Ascension of Christ and Pentecost

The Ascension panel follows the medieval "disappearing feet" iconography. Even though there is plenty of room to represent Christ's body, it represents only the feet and the hem of his garment. As is usual in this pattern, Mary is placed to one side rather than in the center, her normal position in Pentecosts and in Ascensions that have Christ in a mandorla. In this Pentecost, as in many in the later Middle Ages, Mary sits on a raised chair or throne while the Apostles kneel. The dove above her head is of course the Holy Spirit.
